Maritime Work Cat

The Vira-Lata is a catamaran to carry out support work for maritime public works, bathymetry, research, pollution control, etc. It has been designed by the Isonaval design office in close cooperation with both the shipowner and Talleres Blanchadell’s own design office.

The main deck has a elevated platform in the bow area, where the control cabin and the Talleres Blanchadell-designed anchor reel with a line pull of400 Kgare located. The lower level is the working deck and it extends to the stern, where the Hiab Sea Crane with a capacity of 7 TM and a reach of7 mis installed. The crane is fitted with a winch and this area of the deck is also equipped with cup bolts and hooks for cargo lashing. The two bow stanchions and the side and bow rails are removable to facilitate the access of the crane to the sea. The catamaran is fitted with four fixed casings, two in the bow area and two aft. The two bow casings are the ventilator comings, while the two installed aft are the engine room exhaust fans. Two platforms for divers are arranged on the transom shield, one of which is equipped with a foldaway ladder.

Below deck, each hull has the following watertight partitioning: forepeak, orlop deck with two bunkbeds each, galley on the starboard side, bathroom on the port side, hold with flat watertight hatch and engine room. The Solé Diesel Mini 74 auxiliary genset is installed in the engine room of the starboard hull. In addition to driving the 11 KVA generator, it also powers the hydraulic system for the crane and anchor reel. The propulsion plant comprises two Volvo Penta diesel engines, each of which develops a power output of 600 HP. The propulsion equipment also includes the IPS-800 dynamic positioning system. Talleres Blanchadell is the first Spanish yard authorised by Volvo Penta to install this innovative system on a workboat. The Volvo IPS system gives the boat extraordinary manoeuvrability for working and docking. The main and auxiliary engines are fed from two diesel tanks. These are non- structural to prevent condensation and each has a capacity of 1,500 litres.



The bilge, cleaning and fire-fighting system comprises two Creixenti electric pumps located in the engine room and a 24 V electric pump in each watertight compartment. The engine room fire fighting equipment consists of two fixed extinguishers operated from the deck, whilst the other compartments are fitted with portable extinguishers. The design of the hydraulic circuits, hydraulic installations, mechanical installations and, in particular, the installation of the propulsion system was carried out by Talleres Blanchadell. The 24 V direct current and 380 V alternating current installations were carried out by Tallers Cornet and this company also installed the direct current control system.  The protection system is by means of pure aluminium Incor anodes. These are housed in units embedded in the lining to prevent any drag that might be caused by appendages.

The electronic equipment was supplied by Simrad and installed by Juan Ballester. This equipment consists of an autopilot connected to the electronic IPS system of the propulsion plant, radar, echo sounder, Navtex, GPS, radiotelephone, radio beacon, etc. The vessel is painted below the waterline with anti-algae products and the deck with is painted with anti-slip paint, both of the Hempel brand. The tunnel and the strips between the fenders are polished, with the aluminium surface remaining visible. The remainder of the hull and the control cabin are coated with a vinyl layer on top of the aluminium.
